Lock 60 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, offers a peaceful and scenic loop for paddlers and nature lovers alike. Whether you’re in a canoe, kayak, or on a paddleboard, this route delivers a tranquil adventure through a blend of history, wildlife, and quiet beauty. Nestled along the Schuylkill River and the restored Schuylkill Canal, this spot is ideal for a half-day escape into nature.
I began my journey at the historic Fitzwater Station, located right on Canal Street. It’s a convenient launch point with ample parking behind the restaurant—though on weekends and holidays, you’ll want to arrive early, as it can fill up quickly. Launching into the canal is beginner-friendly and provides immediate access to calm, clear waters bordered by lush greenery.
The paddle up the canal is like entering a nature corridor. Along the way, I passed blue herons, turtles sunning on logs, and dragonflies darting across the water. The canal runs parallel to the Schuylkill River Trail, so you might catch glimpses of hikers and cyclists as you make your way upstream.

At the end of the canal, I portaged over to the river—a quick carry that’s well worth it. The transition from canal to river offers a dramatic change in scenery. The Schuylkill River widens here, and the sky opens up in every direction. The water was smooth, the current steady, and the reflection of the clouds above made for a truly meditative paddle. As I floated downstream, I kept an eye out for the power lines, which mark the return path back into the canal for a full loop.
The entire route took just over three hours, including time to float, snap a few photos, and soak in the views. After packing up, I rewarded myself with some barbecue and a cold drink at Fitzwater Station—a perfect way to cap off the day.
